RENO, Nevada — After an incredible run in the United Soccer League and with Reno 1868 FC, forward Dane Kelly has made the move to the MLS signing with D.C. United, the club announced Friday.

The 2017 USL MVP and Golden Boot winner leaves the USL as the league’s all-time leading scorer and one of the biggest names in Reno sports history.

“Dane’s contributions to our club’s incredible success during our inaugural season goes without saying,” said Reno 1868 FC general manager Andy Smith. “He brought veteran leadership to our locker room and cemented a lifelong legacy here in Reno.

“We are excited that he gets to showcase his talents  in the MLS and wish him all the best in the next chapter in an already storied career.”

Kelly enjoyed the most fruitful season of his career in Reno’s inaugural season in 2017.

The Jamaican international recorded back-to-back hat tricks, setting the tone for Reno’s remarkable turnaround in early May.

From that point on, Kelly played a major role throughout the year, chipping in on 22 goals, despite a brief injury spell.

Additionally, Kelly earned his first call-up with his native Jamaica. Kelly’s 18 goals during the regular season, which helped secure his first Golden Boot award, was good for second-most in league history.

“Dane’s goal-scoring ability and leadership were crucial parts of our early success here in Reno,” Reno head coach Ian Russell said. “His success in our league was already well-documented and he only built on that during an MVP season here.

“We wish him all the best as he takes his talents to D.C. United.”
