RENO, Nev.– Reno 1868 FC will be starting four homegrown players today, with forward Cade Cowell, goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski, midfielder Gilbert Fuentes and defender Jacob Akanyirige all in coach Ian Russell’s starting XI.
“It’s really humbling to see how far the club has grown since I first joined the academy in 2011,” said Marcinkowski. “To think that I’ll be sharing the field with a 15 year old and two 17 year olds is absolutely incredible and a massive step in the right direction for the entire organization. It shows how essential Reno is and will continue to be in the development of everyone involved.”
“I’m really excited to play with three other homegrowns tonight,” said Cowell. “They have been an awesome influence on me from the very beginning.”
Cowell and Marcinkowski will be starting for the third straight match. In their two starts, the team has gone 2-0 with a +3 goal differential. Marcinkowski allowed just one goal in the two matches, and saved a penalty kick in his first shutout of the season on Saturday against Sacramento.
Fuentes will be making his fourth appearance with 1868 FC this season, and third start. Fuentes earned an assist in March 30’s draw against OKC, and last appeared for Reno as a substitute on June 8 in San Antonio. Akanyirige will be making his season debut with Reno.
Reno kicks off at home against Rio Grande Valley FC tonight at 7:15 p.m. PT, in a match that will feature post-match fireworks. Tickets are available at reno1868fc.com or the Greater Nevada Field ticket office.
