SACRAMENTO, Calif. – It’s that time of the year again where Reno 1868 FC and Sacramento Republic FC will face off in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open cup match for the third year in a row.
Things to know
In 2017, it was Sacramento Republic FC who hosted the match which was played on May 31st. This was a Third Round Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match and Sacramento won 2-0. Prior to this match, Reno and Sacramento hadn’t yet played each other in an official USL Championship match.
In 2018, the teams met once again in a Third Round match, however it was played at Greater Nevada Field and Sacramento won 1-0. This Open Cup Match was played on May 23rd and the two clubs had met just 11 days earlier in USL play where Reno defeated Sacramento 3-2 at Papa Murphy’s Park.
What’s different this year?
This year, the two clubs are meeting for the second time in just five days and there won’t be much of a change in scenery. This past Saturday, Reno 1868 FC defeated Sacramento Republic FC 4-1 at Papa Murphy’s Park. The already tense rivalry will now have a rematch-style feel for Sacramento and its fans as they get a chance to even the playing field from Saturday’s loss. More importantly, Reno has the chance to get their first Open Cup win against Sacramento, and have two wins over the club under their belt in just five days.
Tonight’s match will kick-off at 7:30 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+. Be sure to follow @Reno1868FC on Twitter for live updates on the match.
